Ghana’s government has commissioned the second phase of Tamale International Airport in northern Ghana.

The UK branch of Brazilian contractor Queiroz Galvao undertook the construction of the airport phase II project, which received co-financing through a GBP43.8 million (US$55.7 million) loan from UK Export Finance. Germany's KfW IPEX-Bank was also involved in the financing aspect. As stated by the Ghana Airports Company, the incremental advancement of Tamale Airport is part of a strategic initiative to position the facility as an alternative to Kotoka International Airport, located in the southern city of Accra.

The goal is to equip Tamale Airport to handle wide-body aircraft during emergency scenarios. Additionally, the government has plans to utilize Tamale Airport to support the Northern Development Authority of Ghana's initiatives in gathering fresh agricultural produce for export to global markets. Phase 2 encompassed four distinct projects, collectively amounting to a US$70 million investment. In comparison, Phase 1, which included three projects, had a total cost of US$130 million.
