Flatiron secures contracts on Southern California infrastructure projects valued at $200 million
Flatiron is collaborating with construction partners and clients to deliver infrastructure projects designed to enhance mobility and safety while creating greater transportation options in Southern California. Valued at ~ $200 million, these projects reinforce the Flatiron strategy to build on successful relationships by securing contracts offering balanced risk profiles and opportunities for greater collaboration with clients.

Southern California is a key market for Flatiron. With more than 30 years of local experience and hundreds of projects successfully delivered, Flatiron continues to lead the industry in highway, transit, aviation, water/wastewater and other heavy civil fields. Flatiron undertakes projects through collaborative delivery models including Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC), Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) and Progressive Design-Build as well as traditional Design-Bid-Build.
North Coast Corridor Segment 4C project
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has awarded the North Coast Corridor (NCC) Segment 4C collaborative delivery project to the joint venture of Flatiron, Skanska and Stacy Witbeck. This $72.5 million project marks the fourth collaboration of Flatiron with Caltrans on the important NCC improvements initiative in the San Diego metro area — bringing the total project value to $737.5 million.
One of Caltrans’ first CM/GC collaborative delivery projects, the NCC is a comprehensive combination of transportation improvements, environmental protection and coastal access projects. Collectively, the projects aim to improve lives, preserve and protect the coastal environment, and strengthen the regional economy.
The CM/GC delivery method is ideal for this project — providing the opportunity for early and ongoing collaboration with Caltrans, our joint-venture partners and other stakeholders.
Key elements of the NCC Segment 4C project include:
• Transportation improvements — Adding new auxiliary lanes and reconfiguring Poinsettia Lane on-ramps and off-ramps for more efficient traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
• Environmental protection — Slope rehabilitation of the Auga Hedionda freeway embankment and upgrades to the bridge barrier rail to enhance ecological sustainability.
• Community well-being — Widening Chestnut Avenue undercrossing, constructing sound-barrier and retaining walls, and upgrading curb ramps to improve coastal access.
Slated for completion in 2026, the NCC project underscores Flatiron’s commitment to delivering sustainable solutions that enhance communities and streamline urban mobility.
LA Metro Eastbound State Route 91 project in Los Angeles County
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) has awarded Flatiron a $99.6 million contract for the Eastbound State Route 91 (EB SR-91) Atlantic to Cherry Improvements project.
The EB SR-91 project introduces an eastbound auxiliary lane between the I-710 freeway and the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp and the Cherry Avenue off-ramp. The endeavor will benefit Long Beach area commuters by improving traffic flow, reducing congestion and enhancing safety.
The EB SR-91 project marks the fourth recent collaboration between LA Metro and Flatiron in the Los Angeles area, highlighting our growth in the diverse heavy civil construction market across Southern California. Alongside this venture, our partnership with LA Metro includes the Rosecrans/Marquardt Grade Separation project to improve railway crossing safety, the I-105 Express Lanes project to provide highway congestion relief, and the Metro G Line Bus Rapid Transit Improvements project to reduce transit travel times.
Fenton Parkway Bridge project in San Diego
San Diego State University (SDSU) has selected Flatiron to spearhead the Fenton Parkway Bridge Project, valued at $28 million, using the CMAR collaborative delivery method.
The approximately 450-foot bridge will extend Fenton Parkway over the San Diego River to Camino Del Rio North, introducing a north-south roadway not subject to flooding and at grade with the trolley crossing. The planned bridge will have up to four spans and feature combined bicycle and pedestrian pathways to meet the community's diverse transportation needs.
The new structure will be a part of the SDSU West Campus development. Upon completion, the City of San Diego will assume ownership, operation and maintenance responsibilities for the bridge, signaling a collaborative effort among stakeholders to improve infrastructure, transportation efficiency and safety within the region.
Construction of Fenton Parkway Bridge is scheduled to begin in October 2024. Flatiron has delivered more than $2.65 billion in CM/GC and CMAR bridge projects over the past 10 years.
