French contractor Vinci has bought two family-run firms to add to its road-building capacity in North America.

One is Newport Construction based in New Hampshire in the US, and the other is Entreprises Marchand & Frères (EMF) in Quebec, Canada.

Newport specialises in road works and small-scale civil engineering projects in the south of New Hampshire and the Boston region of Massachusetts.

It employs 240 people and last year generated revenue of €105m.

It extracts some 50 million tonnes of aggregates from its own quarry, and also has an asphalt plant.

In Quebec, EMF does road works in the centre and north of the province.

It is also vertically integrated, with three asphalt plants, nine rock quarries and two sand quarries.

It employs 220 people and generated revenue of €50m in 2023. Vinci said of this purchase that it would enable it to “densify” its network of businesses in the province.

In 2023, Vinci Construction generated more than €4bn in revenue in North America, with a total workforce of 9,500 people

Vinci said the acquisitions would bolster its public works operations in the northeast of the US, where the division has been present since the acquisition of Lane Construction’s roadworks business in 2018.
