Aecom and Gleeds to programme manage two hospitals in Peru
UK Healthcare Alliance (UKHA) joint venture between US engineer Aecom and UK consultants Curry & Brown and Gleeds has been selected to provide program management services by the Peruvian Ministry of Health, for the construction of two regional hospitals in Piura and Trujillo in northern Peru.
The projects will play a crucial part in the Programa Nacional de Inversiones en Salud (PRONIS) initiative which intends to reduce the gap in health infrastructure within the region.
Peru’s ministry of health will invest about $660m in the facilities, which will reduce the need for patients to travel outside the area for specialised care.
AECOM will serve as the managing business party of UKHA, which will manage the full lifecycle of the implementation of the hospitals. This includes concept design development, management of the procurement process for the design-build and management of the design-build contracts. The joint venture will establish a project management office (PMO) in Lima that will serve as a hub for coordination of hospital activities.
Joao Wrobel, one of Aecom’s business line leaders for Latin America, said: “This significant investment will not only reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for high-quality specialised care but provide better access to healthcare for over 3 million Peruvians.
To increase efficiencies and support effective decision-making processes, UKHA will mandate the use of building information modeling (BIM) and other digital technologies to streamline and facilitate the construction, management and operation of the project. Digital project management tools for cost, schedule and risk management, reviewing designs, and stakeholder engagement will all be utilized to drive risk reduction, better consider the needs of the end user, and improve overall standards across public services and infrastructure.
