French multidisciplinary firm Egis has been appointed lead engineering consultant for the $2.7bn expansion of the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) at Expo City.

The expanded DEC will contain 18ha of indoor exhibition space, making it the largest in the region.

Egis said it would oversee the architectural, structural and services packages. It will also handle value engineering, sustainability, regulatory compliance, and the integration of building information modelling.

Amer Al Farsi, assistant vice president of real estate for the Dubai World Trade Centre, said 26 halls would be added on a single level that spans 1.2km.

That will let the centre hold one mega event or multiple events simultaneously.

Egis’ country manager for the UAE, Gurminder Sagoo, said Egis would devise a “sustainable materials strategy” to meet LEED certification requirements.

The facility will also feature renewable energy systems.
