China-built natural gas facility in Iraq completed ahead of schedule
As the intake valve was gradually opened on December 15, gas from the Faihaa oilfield smoothly entered the natural gas processing unit, marking the successful opening of the block 9 natural gas central processing facility 15 days ahead of schedule.
Begun in April last year, the project sets a new record for the construction work of its kind in Iraq. It is also the first project in Iraq's oil field development history where both crude oil and natural gas processing facilities were planned, constructed and put into operation within the same year. This accomplishment highlights the expertise and strong capabilities of CAMC and Sinomach's other subsidiaries in oil and gas engineering construction.
As a key green and environmental protection initiative in Iraq, the successful operation of the central gas processing facility will significantly reduce associated gas emissions from the oil field. This is crucial for increasing the local natural gas supply, protecting the environment, and reducing carbon emissions. Once operational, the project's natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas will meet the electricity needs of 3 million local households, improving Iraq's energy security and enhancing the quality of life of its citizens.
Among those present on December 15 were Mr. Farkad, Chairman of the District Joint Management Committee in Block 9; Mohammed Taha, manager of Block 9 at Iraq's Basra Oil Company; Chang Guangfa, executive vice-president of Kuwait Energy Basra; Yang Chuanliang, project director of China CAMC Engineering Co; along with the project's production and technical management team.
Throughout the project, the company labored to meet its "four-zero goal" — zero injuries, zero pollution, zero accidents and zero social safety incidents — culminating in 18 million hours of safe labor and a quality acceptance rate of 99.64%. This exemplary performance has been praised by Iraq's Ministry of Oil, United Energy Corporation, and both domestic and international partners.
