India strengthens its solar capacity in Uttar Pradesh after state-run IREDA sanctioned a ₹1,135 crore loan for a 435 MWp project in Lalitpur.

Hindustan Power has reached financial closure on its 435 MWp solar project located in Lalitpur, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, after the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), the state-run agency financing renewable energy projects in India, sanctioned a loan of ₹1,135 crore. This amount is equivalent to approximately $136.7 million (₹1,135 crore, or 11.35 billion Indian rupees), based on an approximate exchange rate of 83 rupees per dollar.

The project ranks among the largest solar developments in Uttar Pradesh and is expected to add significant renewable capacity to the state's energy mix. Other developers have recently finalized similar solar transactions, such as Sol Systems, which acquired the 200 MW Lumberton solar project in Texas, or the ongoing negotiation led by NU E Power Corp. for the Hays solar-storage project in Alberta.

Financing structured around IREDA

The ₹1,135 crore loan sanctioned by IREDA forms the core of the project's financing structure. The government agency plays a central role in deploying renewable capacity across India, supporting private developers in raising debt for solar and wind infrastructure. Financial closure marks a decisive milestone before the project enters its implementation phase.

Hindustan Power has not disclosed a detailed construction timeline or an expected commercial operation date for the facility. The company states that the project will now move into its next implementation phase, bringing it closer to supplying clean power at scale.

A boost for Uttar Pradesh's energy transition

Uttar Pradesh, one of India's most populous states, is seeking to diversify its power mix by integrating more renewable capacity. The Lalitpur project fits within this regional momentum, alongside other solar initiatives led by public and private players across the country. Renewable power purchase agreements also continue to expand internationally, as illustrated by the 1.5 MW solar power purchase agreement signed between Nagaki Shoji and Sanden in Japan.

The financial closure secured by Hindustan Power confirms continued interest from Indian financial institutions in large-scale solar projects, as the country pursues sustained growth in its installed renewable capacity.
