Sacyr-Ferrovial JV to renew the Torrevieja desalination plant for €89 million
The Board of directors of Acuamed has awarded the JV comprising Sacyr Water (40%), Sacyr Construction (10%), Cadagua, Ferrovial’s water unit (40%), and Ferrovial Construction (10%) the contract to expand, operate and maintain the Torrevieja desalination plant (Alicante) for €89.5 million over a four-year period.
The objective of this project is to increase the plant’s desalinated water output by 50%, from the current 80 hm³ per year to 120 hm³.
The works will double the seawater collection and pumping capacity in the western dock of the Port of Torrevieja. This includes the construction of a new warehouse of almost 5,000 sqm equipped with new reverse osmosis desalination systems.
Additionally, the contract includes the operation and maintenance of the facility for four years to guarantee a quality water supply to users.
The expansion of the plant will ensure the water supply for the population of the Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla and for irrigation of the crop fields in Campo de Cartagena.
The most relevant activities that the JV will carry out are:
- Construction of a new warehouse of almost 5,000 m² to house the new osmosis equipment and the electrical room, along with the installation of five new racks with energy recovery and PX isobaric chambers.
- Expansion of the seawater catchment system with two new catchment systems.
- Increased capacity for seawater pumping.
- Modification of the CO2 dosing system by pressurizing permeate water prior to dosing.
- Expansion of the treated water pumping station at the EBI plant and the second EBII step, both equipped with three new pumps and an anti-ram tank.
