Spanish renewables developer ACCIONA Energía has been awarded a 12-year contract for difference (CfD) for its Promina solar power project in Croatia.

The 189 megawatts peak (MWp) photovoltaic plant, currently under development, will be the largest solar facility in the country upon its completion in 2027.

The Promina solar plant will be located in Sibenik-Knin province in southern Croatia.

It will feature 300,000 photovoltaic (PV) modules generating 320 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually, enough to meet the energy needs of 69,000 homes and avoid the emission of about 140,000t of CO₂ each year.

The CfD for the Promina plant was secured through a competitive public auction, part of a Croatian government support programme facilitated by the Croatian energy regulator HROTE and sanctioned by the European Commission.

ACCIONA Energía will construct a new 400kV interconnection substation to enable the integration of the generated energy into the national transmission grid.

The Promina solar plant will also be incorporated into ACCIONA Energía’s social impact management programme.

The Promina project complements the company’s existing portfolio in the country, which comprises the Opor (27MW) and Boraja 2 (45MW) wind projects under construction and the operational Jelinak wind complex (30MW).

With these projects, ACCIONA Energía will produce 8% of Croatia’s total renewable capacity and 20% of its solar power.

In July 2024, ACCIONA Energía agreed to divest its hydroelectric portfolio, Acciona Saltos de Agua, SL group, to Elawan Energy for $310m.
