ACCIONA and Ferrovial complete the construction of a highway in Peru
ACCIONA, in partnership with Ferrovial, has completed the construction of a 29.7-kilometer highway that continues the Pan-American Highway through the city of Chimbote, in northern Peru. The new road will improve urban traffic congestion in the municipality and cut the travel time by 65%, reducing the journey from two hours to 40 minutes.
The project required an investment of PEN600 million (€142 million) and was executed over two years and nine months, finishing three months ahead of schedule. The works also included the construction of three roundabouts, eight underpasses, auxiliary roads, and the replacement of a large network of irrigation systems.
Thanks to this new section, travel times within Chimbote have been reduced by 30 to 45 minutes, and road safety has improved significantly. Furthermore, the project contributes to better air quality in the city center, as it prevents both light and heavy vehicles from entering the urban area, facilitating smoother traffic flow north and south.
As part of this project, ACCIONA and Ferrovial have launched several initiatives to protect and improve the quality of life for local communities and their surroundings. Among other actions, a training program for farmers has been implemented to promote local employment. Additionally, continuous water supply for crop irrigation has been maintained, and an extensive dust control and mitigation plan was carried out to avoid harming local agricultural operations.
