The San Antonio International Airport in Texas has broken ground on the $1.2bn, 80,000-sq-m Terminal C.

It will be about the same size as the airport’s existing terminals A and B combined, and will add 17 extra gates by 2028.

Six of the gates will be able to accommodate wide-bodied jets.

As well as club lounges and 3,800 sq m of retail, it will contain a federal inspection station for international air service and a central passenger screening area for all terminals.

The airport is also intending to renovate Terminal A and upgrade the road system to cater to a projected growth in passengers.

In 2023, a record 10.7 million passengers used the airport, 3% more than the pre-pandemic record of 10.4 million achieved in 2019.

The San Antonio metropolitan area has a population of 2.6 million, making it the third largest urban conglomeration in Texas.
